When I'm 80, I Want To Be Like Edward Albee!

Tuesday March 11, 2008

On March 12th, Edward Albee -- one of America's greatest living playwrights -- will be turning 80 years old. And where is he? Is he relaxing in some tropical location, resting on his laurels? No way.

Mr. Albee is celebrating his eighth decade by directing two of his shorter plays, The American Dream and The Sandbox. The plays premiere this week at the Cherry Lane Theatre.

His playwriting career began with The Zoo Story, written in the late 1950s. During the early 60s, he gained international acclaim for the tumultuous drama, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? In 2002, his controversial The Goat or Who Is Silvia? won best play at the Tony Awards.

Don't you wish we all had such creative energy?

As a humble tribute to Edward Albee, I spent my weekend re-reading Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Despite the fact that it is over 40 years old, it still packs a mighty wallop. The main characters George and Martha possess a venom rarely experienced on the stage.
