From the article: Performing a Monologue for Drama Class
Heard this one before? A young student tells Mom and Dad he wants to study theater in college. He wants to become a professional actor. The mother starts to cry and the father starts to yell.
Many parents believe that their children should not major in theater, but should instead obtain a degree in a more practical arena.
What do you think? If a student loves acting, should they devote their time and money towards a college degree? Should they pursue their artistic goals without a formal education? Should they take on a double major so that they have a "fall back" plan?
And what colleges would you recommend? Share Your Thoughts
Is a Theater Degree Worth It?
- You could ask the same of just about any liberal arts degree. I have a bachelor's degree in theatre, and I'm in a post-bacc dramatic arts teaching program. I'm interested in playwriting, so there aren't very many theatre jobs I could apply to. But if a student majors in production, there should be jobs out there. However, I do know that a lot of liberal arts students have a second major--usually in marketing. I would recommend that, if only because it won't cost any more to get two degrees.
