March Playwriting Contests

March brings not only spring but many great opportunities for up-and-coming writers.

1. Featured Competition of the Month: Princess Grace Foundation

From the website: “National in scope, the Princess Grace Foundation-USA is dedicated to identifying and assisting emerging talent in theater, dance, and film by awarding grants in the form of scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships.”

These very generous grants -- varying in amounts between $5,000 and $25,000 -- are given to artists in the mediums of theater and dance. The playwriting grant is normally $7,500. The foundation is a fitting tribute to the talented and beautiful Grace Kelly. (Princess Grace of Monaco).

Deadline: March 31st

Visit the official website for further information.

2. Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest

Pioneer Drama Service hosts its annual “Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest.” In honor of the play publishing company’s founder, this competition seeks new, unpublished plays for elementary, middle school and high school students.

If your play is accepted by the editors it will then be eligible for the $1,000 royalty advance in addition to publication. Even if your play is not accepted, there is a good chance you will receive constructive feedback (if the editors feels your work shows potential).

Deadline: March 1st

3. The Very Short Play Competition

Think fast! The Very Short Play Festival provides a very unusual opportunity for playwrights. Dramatists may submit plays no longer than ten minutes. In fact, keep it as short as you can. Playwrights may submit scripts that last for only a few minutes or even a few seconds.

Deadline: March 1st

Sponsored by the Northfield Arts Guild, plays will be performed in late April of 2008.

4. Metropolitan Playhouse (One Act Festival)

You don’t have to live in Lower East Manhattan to write a play for this competition, but it certainly helps! This 5th annual short play festival celebrates the culture, energy, and excitement of life on the Lower East Side.

What's that? You have no idea what life is like in Manhattan? Then allow me to recommend our About.com guide, Pamela Skillings -- her website will get you on the right track.

Deadline: March 15th

5. 9th Annual Short Stories Playwright's Festival

From the website: "A celebration of the playwright, Short Stories 9, will be a collection of short plays from the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender perspective that will be produced together for a week’s run in late June of 2008."

Each year the “NativeAliens” Theatre Collective seeks short plays from the gay/lesbian perspective. The specific theme this year focuses on middle aged members of the gay community.

Deadline: March 22nd

6. Hangar Theatre - Playwright Competitions and Workshops

Hangar Theatre of Ithica, New York is seeking previously unpublished, never-before-produced one-act plays for its 2008 season. Four playwrights will be selected for a two-to-three week residence at the Hangar Theatre, receiving funds for transportation and housing.

The playwrights will also witness the rehearsal process before seeing the final product. Sounds like a great opportunity!

Deadline: March 28th
