Definition:

When background information is explained through dialogue. In theater, if the characters explain too much background information related to the plot of the story, most audiences will feel that too much exposition weakens the storytelling process.

On the other hand, sometimes a playwright chooses to create an expository scene (a scene designed to explain or clarify information pertaining to the story) in order to provide important details about the characters and their circumstances.
