Dramatic Irony

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

When the audience is more aware of circumstances than the characters on the stage.

Examples:
During the final scenes of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo believes that Juliet has been slain. When he visits her tomb, he drinks poison to join her in death. However, unlike the tragic hero, the audience knows that Juliet is merely asleep. Hence, we know more than the characters do: dramatic irony!
