Originating from Italy during the 1500s, Commedia Dell’Arte translates into “comedy of the artists.” The earliest plays of this nature followed a basic romantic comedy storyline. Although the dialogue was improvised, the actors used well-rehearsed slapstick humor and risqué jokes.

Traditionally, commedia dell’arte is performed in the outdoors, and the acting troupe wears colorfully elaborate costumes and masks.
