I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Neil LaBute has revisited the characters of one of his older plays, reasons to be pretty. After I have finished reading or watching a play, I often spend far too much time imagining what happens next. So even though sequels run the risk of disappointing the audience, I actually appreciate the attempt when playwrights return to familiar territory and explore the big question: What Happened Next?
LaBute's sequel, Reasons to Be Happy, is still filled with anxiety-ridden, needy characters (who still love to swear); however, there is decidedly more optimism in this play, much more so than previous dark comedies written by LaBute. Happy debuted on Broadway last month with a great cast (including The Office's Jenna Fischer. Playbill.com has compiled a list of links to all the major theater critics. But if you have seen the play, I would love to know your thoughts. Leave a comment and share your thoughts on Reasons to Be Happy.
