Since its release in 2003, the Will Ferrell Christmas comedy has been one of my family's holiday favorites. It's become an annual tv-watching tradition, just like the Charlie Brown special and It's a Wonderful Life. The lovable yet manic main character Buddy the Elf is an ideal device for musical theater. As with other kid-friendly movies like Mary Poppins and Big, Elf evolved into a Broadway musical that recently to regional theaters.
The songs are whimsical, although none of the tunes sticks with me. Most of the joy of this stage production comes from seeing this boyish man overwhelm the New Yorker characters with his infectious holiday spirit.
