Like Shakespeare's tale of star crossed lovers, West Side Story focuses on two kids who fall head-over-heels in love, even though they come from rival factions bent on mutual destruction
Since its Broadway debut in the late 1950s and its subsequent Oscar -winning success as a 1961 classic film, West Side Story has been performed in revivals, on regional stages, and has been a favorite among high school drama teachers. And despite the dated sound of the dialogue, this musical still strikes a chord with audiences. It's no surprise that the current season of Glee has embraced the songs of West Side Story, prominently featuring in the popular TV show's storyline.
But beyond the emotional songs and the amazing dance numbers, do the themes of West Side Story still resonate with audiences of today? Leave your own comments on our Plays/Drama blog, and then check out my review of the "cracko-jacko" musical, West Side Story.
